Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist Review
Fossil might be best known for the affordable quality of their stylish analogue timepieces, but that’s not all they’ve got to offer the watch world. We got a chance to take a look at one of their best smartwatch offerings in our Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist review. Let’s start with the basics. The Explorist comes with an in-built fitness tracker, notification support, as well as Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi connectivity. It runs on both iPhone and Android and has a lot of customization options. That’s a lot of functionality to fit in a watch, and it definitely isn’t a small one. With a 46mm case and 12.5mm thickness, the Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 is one of the bigger smartwatches around. That size has a purpose though, as it’s one of the few smartwatches with an IP67 water resistance rating, and it’s rugged enough to do just about anything except diving. But what we found in our Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist review is that what sets it apart is its versatility.
During our time with the Explorist, we’ve really enjoyed the customization of its dial as well as the ability to assign functions to the buttons on the side of the case. Coupled with the variety of interchangeable straps and a clean stainless case, we think the Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist is a very capable smartwatch in almost every setting, formal or informal. At first glance, it looks like a traditional analogue watch, so it’ll never look out of place on your wrist. And as we mentioned earlier in our Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist review, the inclusion of an IP67 rating and fitness tracker in the smartwatch make it a good choice as a workout companion, and you don’t have to worry about it being damaged by sweat or dirt. There is also a built-in microphone and speaker, which lets you make phone calls directly through the watch without having to take your phone out of your pocket. But the most enticing feature of this watch is the price. At the time of this review’s publication, the Explorist on a brown leather strap can be found on sale at amazon.com for less than $180. Considering the price of some competing smartwatches at two, even three times the cost of the Explorist, Fossil makes a compelling case for purchasing this watch on its value alone.
However, there are a few drawbacks that are worth mentioning. During our Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist review, we found that the battery was average at best. While it never needed to be topped off during the day, it’s certainly not a smartwatch that can keep going without being charged overnight. The Explorist also lacks NFC connectivity, and though this certainly isn’t a deal breaker for us here at Wrist Authority, it can be for others who like to make mobile payments using their smartwatch. Finally, the case size is a bit large at 46mm. Spending time with the watch for our Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist review made it difficult to ignore the size of the piece, especially considering many competing watches offer the similar internals or even better in a smaller form factor. I personally prefer a smaller diameter of between 36mm and 42mm from a stylistic standpoint. While I did not find it too cumbersome, it may be unwieldly and a bit large for people of normal size.
Overall, we found that the Fossil Q Men’s Gen 3 Explorist offers great value for money, and is a very versatile watch. Despite concerns over battery life and lack of NFC connectivity, we know that preferring a smaller case is a matter of taste that might not be shared by others in the market for an otherwise quality smartwatch. The Explorist’s customizability, style, and practicality make it an enticing package already, but at an affordable price point of only $174.99 on a leather strap, it’s a bargain that is almost impossible to overlook.
